The Word of God

Opening Hymn     Come thou fount of every blessing

  1. Come, thou fount of every blessing, tune my heart to sing thy grace!
    Streams of mercy never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise.
    Teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues above.
    Praise the mount! O fix me on it, mount of God’s unchanging love.
  2. Here I find my greatest treasure; hither by thy help, I’ve come;
    and I hope, by thy good pleasure, safely to arrive at home.
    Jesus sought me when a stranger, wandering from the fold of God;
    he, to rescue me from danger, interposed his precious blood.
  3. Oh, to grace how great a debtor daily I’m constrained to be!
    Let thy goodness, like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to thee;
    prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love;
    here’s my heart, oh, take and seal it, seal it for thy courts above.

Opening Acclamation

Blessed be God:  Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And blessed be God’s kingdom, now and for ever.  Amen.

The Collect for Purity (together)

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Gloria

Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth.  Lord God, heavenly King,  almighty God and Father,  we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory.  Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; You are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

The Collect of the Day

The Lord be with you.  And also with you.  Let us pray.

Grant us, O Lord, to trust in you with all our hearts; for, as you always resist the proud who confide in their own strength, so you never forsake those who make their boast of your mercy; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The First Reading     Isaiah 35:4-7a

Say to those who are of a fearful heart, ‘Be strong, do not fear! Here is your God. He will come with vengeance, with terrible recompense. He will come and save you.’ Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; then the lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongue of the speechless sing for joy. For waters shall break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert; the burning sand shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water.

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Psalm 146 (in unison)

Hallelujah! Praise the Lord, O my soul! * I will praise the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God while I have my being. Put not your trust in rulers, nor in any child of earth, * for there is no help in them. When they breathe their last, they return to earth, * and in that day their thoughts perish. Happy are they who have the God of Jacob for their help! * whose hope is in the Lord their God; Who made heaven and earth, the seas, and all that is in them; * who keeps his promise for ever; Who gives justice to those who are oppressed, * and food to those who hunger. The Lord sets the prisoners free; the Lord opens the eyes of the blind; * the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down; The Lord loves the righteous; the Lord cares for the stranger; * he sustains the orphan and widow, but frustrates the way of the wicked. The Lord shall reign for ever, * your God, O Zion, throughout all generations. Hallelujah!

The Second Reading     James 2:1-10, 14-17

My brothers and sisters, do you with your acts of favoritism really believe in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ? For if a person with gold rings and in fine clothes comes into your assembly, and if a poor person in dirty clothes also comes in, and if you take notice of the one wearing the fine clothes and say, “Have a seat here, please,” while to the one who is poor you say, “Stand there,” or, “Sit at my feet,” have you not made distinctions among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts? Listen, my beloved brothers and sisters. Has not God chosen the poor in the world to be rich in faith and to be heirs of the kingdom that he has promised to those who love him? But you have dishonored the poor. Is it not the rich who oppress you? Is it not they who drag you into court? Is it not they who blaspheme the excellent name that was invoked over you?     You do well if you really fulfill the royal law according to the scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” But if you show partiality, you commit sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become accountable for all of it. What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but do not have works? Can faith save you? If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill,” and yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead.   The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The Gospel Acclamation     Celtic Alleluia

The Gospel     Mark 7:24-37

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark.  Glory to you, O Christ.

Jesus set out and went away to the region of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know he was there. Yet he could not escape notice, but a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit immediately heard about him, and she came and bowed down at his feet. Now the woman was a Gentile, of Syrophoenician origin. She begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter. He said to her, “Let the children be fed first, for it is not fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the dogs.” But she answered him, “Sir, even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.” Then he said to her, “For saying that, you may go—the demon has left your daughter.” So she went home, found the child lying on the bed, and the demon gone.     Then he returned from the region of Tyre, and went by way of Sidon towards the Sea of Galilee, in the region of the Decapolis. They brought to him a deaf man who had an impediment in his speech; and they begged him to lay his hand on him. He took him aside in private, away from the crowd, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spat and touched his tongue. Then looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to him, “Ephphatha,” that is, “Be opened.” And immediately his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly. Then Jesus ordered them to tell no one; but the more he ordered them, the more zealously they proclaimed it. They were astounded beyond measure, saying, “He has done everything well; he even makes the deaf to hear and the mute to speak.”

The Gospel of the Lord.  Praise to you, O Christ.

The Homily                                                                                                             The Rev. Lisa Green

       A period of silence follows the sermon.

The Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father.  Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.  He has spoken through the Prophets.  We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.  We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.  We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Prayers of the People

Let us pray to God for the poor in the world and for all in every danger and need.

For Susan, our bishop, and Cathy and Lisa, our priests, for this holy gathering, and for the people of God in every place. Lord, have mercy.

For all peoples, tribes, clans, and families and for mercy, justice, and peace in the world. Lord, have mercy.

For abundant fruits of the earth, and for safety from violent storms, especially those in the path of Ida. Lord, have mercy.

For the blind, the deaf, the lame, and the speechless, and for the dying and dead. Lord, have mercy.

For our city and those who live in it, and for our families, companions, and all those we love.

Lord, have mercy.

For our deliverance from all affliction, strife, and need. Lord, have mercy.

Bless all whose lives are closely linked with ours, and grant that we may serve Christ in them, and love one another as Christ loves us.  We pray for Joan, Katherine, Gwen, Carol, Kellie and John, Gini, Sandy, Ben, Sharon, Mal, and for the children of St. Vincent’s School, Haiti.  We pray for the dying and those who have died, especially Judy Bishop, and we pray that we may share with all your saints in your eternal kingdom.

Lord, have mercy.

Lifting our voices with all creation, with Blessed Martin, the Blessed Virgin Mary and all the saints, let us offer ourselves and one another to the living God through Christ.  To you, O Lord.

God of healing and salvation, hear us as we beg your mercy, open our ears to receive your word, and release our tongues to sing your praise; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Confession of Sin

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

The Absolution

The Peace and Announcements

The peace of the Lord be always with you.  And also with you.

The Holy Communion

The Offertory Anthem     Surely the Presence

The Great Thanksgiving     Eucharistic Prayer B

The Lord be with you.  And also with you. Lift up your hearts.  We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.  It is right to give God thanks and praise.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. For you are the source of light and life, you made us in your image, and called us to new life in Jesus Christ our Lord. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:   Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power, God of might, heaven and earth are full of your glory.  Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.  Hosanna in the highest. We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

        We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory;

And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with Martin and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.  By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread.  And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory for ever and ever.  Amen.

The Breaking of Bread

Alleluia.  Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us.  Therefore let us keep the feast.  Alleluia.

Communion Hymns

Peace is flowing

  1. Peace is flowing like a river, flowing out through you and me;
    flowing out into the desert, setting all the captives free.

2    Joy is flowing…     3   Faith is flowing…     4   Hope is flowing…     5   Love is flowing…

Be Not Afraid

  1. You shall cross the barren desert but you shall not die of thirst.
    You shall wander far in safety though you do not know the way.
    You shall speak your words to foreign lands and all will understand.
    You shall see the face of God and live.

Refrain   Be not afraid I go before you always. Come, follow me, and I will give you rest.

2. If you pass through raging waters in the sea you shall not drown.
If you walk amid the burning flames, you shall not be harmed.
If you stand before the pow’r of hell and death is at your side,
know that I am with you through it all.
Refrain

3. And blessed are your poor for the kingdom shall be theirs
Blest are you that weep and mourn for one day you shall laugh.
And if wicked men insult and hate you all because of me,
blessed, blessed are you.
Refrain

The Post-Communion Prayer

Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Blessing

The Closing Hymn     I Am for You

1    There is a mountain, there is a sea. There is a wind within all breathing.

      There is an arm to break every chain. There is a fire in all things living.

      There is a voice that speaks from the flame: I Am for You, I Am for You, I Am for You is my name.

2    There was a man who walked in the storm, caught in between the waves and the lightning,

      sharing his bread with those cast aside, healing by touch the lost and the dying.

      Sending us forth he says to his friends: I am for you, I am for you, I am for you to the end.

3    There is a world that waits in the womb. There is a hope unborn God is bearing.

      Though the powers of death prowl the night, there is a day our God is preparing.

      Sing ‘round the fire to waken the dawn: I am for you, I am for you! I am for you: we are one!

The Dismissal

Let us go forth into the world, rejoicing in the power of the Spirit.  Thanks be to God.

“Alleluia, alleluia” is only said during Easter season.
